Science of Tanning
The sun and indoor tanning beds produce around 95% UVA and 5% UVB rays. UVB rays are what prompt that tanning process.
UVB rays cause MSH (melanocyte stimulating hormone) to be secreted from the pituitary gland.
This hormone is what starts the tanning process, it starts the melanin synthesizing process.
One the melanin is synthesized and released from melanocytes the rises to the surface of the skin.
This darken melanin is what we call a “tan”
Tanning is the out natural defense against the body.
While UVB is critical for producing Vitamin D our body can still tell when enough is enough and the tanning process begins.
